How Swimming Fought Breast Cancer

That’s why I love the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund.  BCEF makes that kind of dramatic difference in people’s lives. This is why I am raising money for them.

My name is Karen Edwards, and I am a donor, volunteer and now board member for the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund (BCEF).  BCEF provides emergency financial assistance to low-income women and men who are battling breast cancer, but who are too sick to work. A cancer diagnosis is devastating for anyone. It’s even more devastating when you have little to no health insurance, are unable to work during your treatment to pay for essential bills, and are already at or below the poverty line. BCEF helps people in need continue life-extending medical treatments, prevent eviction, utility shut-off, and maintain stable housing while they battle breast cancer.

I got involved with BCEF a few years ago at the urging of several of my friends who had volunteered with them for years. I volunteered at events, met clients and worked closely with their small but amazing staff. Two years ago I joined the board because I believed in their work. My board service has been one of the most satisfying periods in my life, knowing I am helping give back to those less fortunate than me.
